
Hyderabad, May 29: In a groundbreaking initiative, the Telangana government’s Hyderabad Disaster Response and Property Protection Agency (HYDRA) has provided employment opportunities to 16 transgender individuals. This group consists of eleven transgender women and five transgender men. Recently, HYDRA has gained attention for its efforts to remove encroachments from water bodies and government lands in and around Hyderabad.
The newly hired individuals expressed that their employment with HYDRA has brought a new light into their lives. The dignity associated with this job has instilled a profound sense of self-confidence within them.
According to an official statement released on Friday, these 16 individuals are ready to perform their duties anytime and anywhere. They are actively involved in removing encroachments from lakes and drainage channels and are at the forefront of protecting public parks and lands designated for community use in the state.
Undeterred by the status or influence of encroachers, they carry out their duties fearlessly, playing a crucial role in safeguarding public properties in Telangana.
They believe that the job they received at HYDRA is not merely a means of survival but a symbol of a new identity in their lives. Wearing the HYDRA uniform fills them with pride, and they expressed immense joy in being part of the ‘HYDRA Eagle Team’ and fully engaging in operational duties.
Members of the transgender team have played a significant role in successfully securing 862 acres of government land in the Ameenpur mandal of Sangareddy district. Recently, they also took an active role in saving the Edulakunta Lake in Madhopur.
They are instrumental in mediating discussions, reducing tensions, and facilitating coordination between officials and the community.
HYDRA officials noted that the team possesses a natural ability to understand people’s emotions and show empathy, earning praise for consistently delivering excellent results in their fieldwork.
Transgender individuals working with HYDRA are now also providing financial support to their families.
Tanshi Rai mentioned that they earn a steady income each month, which has elevated their respect in society. Most importantly, this realization has significantly boosted their confidence, proving that they can make a meaningful contribution to society through their work.
She shared that they used to beg for survival. In the past, they faced ridicule wherever they went. When they sought jobs, they were often turned down. However, now, when they step out in uniform to perform their duties, everyone speaks to them with respect.
Gayatri added that if given the opportunity, transgender individuals can excel in any field. Their duty at HYDRA is evidence of this. Everyone, from the officials to other staff members, fully supports them. They are treated equally while performing their duties.
