Guwahati, May 29: A tragic incident occurred in the Golpara district of Assam on Friday, where three individuals lost their lives due to toxic gas exposure inside a septic tank. Authorities reported that among the deceased was a soldier of the Indian Army.
The victims have been identified as Jochok Rabha (the homeowner and army personnel), mason Krishna Rai, and another laborer, Dilip Das.
According to officials, the incident took place while cleaning a toilet tank at Rabha’s home. It was noted that Rabha had returned home on a week-long leave and had initiated some construction work.
Before proceeding with further tasks, he had hired several masons for the septic tank cleaning. During the process, one of the workers entered the tank first but quickly lost consciousness due to the toxic gas accumulated in the confined space.
Seeing him fall, another mason attempted to rescue him by entering the tank, but he too succumbed to the gas and lost consciousness. In an effort to save the two workers, Rabha himself entered the septic tank, only to collapse from the toxic fumes as well.
Later, during the rescue attempt, a local resident named Bajpayee Rabha entered the tank but struggled to breathe. He called out for help, alerting nearby residents to the incident.
Local people rushed to the scene and successfully pulled him out alive. He was subsequently admitted for treatment at the Shaheed Nidhuram Rajbongshi Hospital in Golpara.
Officials confirmed that the three individuals trapped inside the tank had died on the spot, likely due to inhalation of the toxic gas.
Doctors stated that Bajpayee Rabha is still undergoing treatment and is reported to be in critical condition. The incident has left the entire area in shock and mourning.
The police have initiated an investigation into the incident, with expectations that authorities will examine whether proper safety measures were followed during the cleaning process.
