Kolkata, May 29: Abhijit Majumdar, the president of the Assam Trinamool Congress, resigned from his position on Friday. He alleged that the party has transformed into a ‘Trinamool Muslim Congress‘, leaving no space for Hindus like him.
In an interview, Majumdar, who has been a member of the party since its inception, claimed that no individual aligned with Hindu ideology can remain in the party. He emphasized that the party has indeed changed into a ‘Trinamool Muslim Congress’.
“I am a Hindu and believe in God, which is why my conscience did not allow me to stay in this party,” he stated.
Majumdar referenced the recent incident involving the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, highlighting the rising reports of atrocities against Hindus.
He also pointed out that Shermaan Ali Ahmed, the only Trinamool Congress MLA in Assam, joined the party just seven days before the recent state elections. Majumdar noted that Ahmed was expelled from Congress and the Raijor Dal led by Akhil Gogoi. Furthermore, he mentioned that Ahmed did not contest elections on a Trinamool Congress ticket but won from an area predominantly inhabited by Bangladeshi Muslims.
Majumdar cited another reason for his resignation, claiming that during Ahmed’s victory celebrations, he stated that he did not care about others and would work for Bangladeshi Muslims. Ahmed also mentioned plans to bring 20 MLAs from the same region in the next elections.
The former Trinamool leader accused the party leadership of using a specific community to polarize and ‘ruin’ West Bengal. He asserted that the Trinamool Congress is attempting to replicate this strategy in Assam by leveraging Muslim support, making his departure from the party the best option.
He further claimed that no member of the Trinamool Congress in Assam even sits in the party office.
