New Delhi, May 29: Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan participated in the national conference on agriculture for the two-day ‘Kharif Campaign 2026.’ He expressed pride in India’s agricultural achievements, stating that the country has become completely self-reliant in food security.
Chouhan announced, “India has become the number one rice producer in the world, surpassing China. We have also seen significant increases in the production of wheat, corn, pulses, and oilseeds. This is a result of our farmers’ hard work and the relentless efforts of scientists. I salute all the farmers of the nation.”
He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a visionary leader, emphasizing that under his guidance, efforts are ongoing to ensure food security, improve farmers’ lives, and provide nutrition to the populace.
Chouhan highlighted seed availability as a major challenge, urging states to address this issue. He stated, “Seeds are the lifeline of agriculture, but timely access to quality seeds remains a significant problem. The country needed 173 lakh quintals of seeds for the Kharif season, yet we have 192 lakh quintals available. The National Seeds Corporation alone produces 21 lakh quintals of seeds. Despite this, many farmers do not receive seeds on time. Sometimes, mini-kits are distributed after the sowing period has passed.”
He appealed to agricultural ministers of all states to ensure timely stock collection and delivery of seeds to farmers. He announced that from June 1 to June 30, a ‘Save the Fields Campaign’ will be launched nationwide, aimed at protecting fields and enriching farmers.
Chouhan clarified that regulations and procedures exist for the benefit of farmers, not the other way around. Changes are necessary wherever rules hinder benefits from reaching farmers.
He reiterated that the government’s goal is not only to ensure food security but also to increase farmers’ incomes and elevate their living standards. This conference was organized to strengthen preparations for Kharif 2026 and enhance coordination with states, emphasizing better collaboration between central and state governments to accelerate progress in the agricultural sector.
