Massive 30-Foot Whale Found Dead at Odisha’s River Mouth, Investigation Underway

In Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district, a startling discovery was made when a massive whale measuring around 30 feet was found dead at the mouth of the Devi River. The sudden appearance of such a large marine creature has caused concern among local residents.

The site of the discovery falls within the Nadiakhua area of Balikuda block, which is under the jurisdiction of Bandhar Marine Police Station and Bandhar Forest Range.

Local fishermen were the first to spot the whale’s carcass near the river mouth. They promptly informed the Marine Police and forest department officials. Following the alert, a forest department team reached the location by boat and took possession of the whale’s body. Preparations were then made to send the whale for a post-mortem examination.

According to forest officer Priyvrat Chaudhary, given the seriousness of the case, a special team was summoned from Nandankanan. Additionally, a veterinary medical team conducted the post-mortem.

The whale was initially seen stranded on Saturday evening, but due to darkness, officials could not reach the spot immediately. On Sunday morning, officers from the Kujang Forest Division arrived with the Nandankanan medical team by boat. The whale’s body was carefully transported to Cuttack for a detailed post-mortem. Officials stated that the exact cause of death will be determined only after the investigation report is received.

Currently, the forest department has launched a thorough probe to ascertain whether the whale died of natural causes or if factors such as injury, illness, pollution, or entanglement in fishing nets played a role.
