Laughton Shines in Philly Return as Maple Leafs Edge Flyers 2-1 in OT

PHILADELPHIA — Easton Cowan scored early in overtime, and Scott Laughton netted a short-handed goal in his first game back in Philadelphia, leading the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 2-1 victory over the Flyers on Thursday night.

Cowan’s winning goal came just 2:48 into a fast-paced overtime. He finished a 2-on-1 breakaway with a precise pass from John Tavares, concluding an intense extra period where both teams exchanged chances and goalies made impressive saves.

Toronto’s goalkeeper Dennis Hildeby played a crucial role, denying a breakaway attempt by Trevor Zegras and making back-to-back stops against Matvei Michkov and Sean Couturier. These saves helped set up the counterattack that resulted in Cowan’s goal. Hildeby ended the game with 22 saves, helping Toronto snap a five-game road losing streak.

Scott Laughton, who spent 12 years with the Flyers before moving to Toronto at last season’s trade deadline, scored a short-handed goal late in the third period to tie the match at 1-1 with 5:56 remaining.

For Philadelphia, Travis Konecny scored the game’s opening goal just 55 seconds into the second period. His 14th goal of the season came before he left the game due to an upper-body injury.

Flyers goalie Dan Vladar made 21 saves in the contest. However, Philadelphia has struggled against Toronto recently, holding a 1-10-3 record in their last 14 encounters.

Looking ahead, the Maple Leafs will host the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday, while the Flyers prepare to face the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first game of a two-match series at home on the same day.
