Ranjit Kumar Das Elected Speaker: A Proud Moment for BJP Workers, Says CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati, May 21: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Thursday that the election of senior BJP leader Ranjit Kumar Das as the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly is a moment of pride for millions of grassroots BJP workers.

Speaking in the assembly after Das assumed the Speaker’s role, CM Sarma reflected on the political journey of the seasoned BJP leader, praising his confidence, experience, and commitment to democratic values.

The Chief Minister noted that when Das was fielded from the Sarbhog constituency, the election was not considered an easy contest, with new political challenges emerging daily.

Sarma acknowledged that if Das had lost, he would have felt a moral responsibility, as he was moved from a relatively easier constituency to a more challenging one. However, he emphasized that Das remained confident throughout the campaign, repeatedly assuring him that despite speculation and political discussions on social media, he would win by a significant margin.

CM Sarma mentioned that many, including leaders from their own party, often questioned whether Ranjit Kumar Das would lose the election. Yet, both of them were always confident that he would win easily.

The Chief Minister highlighted that Das’s confidence ultimately reflected in the election results, as he was re-elected from Sarbhog by a substantial margin in the 2026 assembly elections.

Sarma remarked that Das’s election as Speaker is not just a personal achievement but a moment of joy for millions of BJP workers who come from humble backgrounds and work tirelessly at the grassroots level for the party.

He expressed confidence that Das’s extensive political experience, his organizational background in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and his deep understanding of parliamentary traditions would help him emerge as a successful and respected Speaker.

Additionally, CM Sarma urged Das to maintain impartiality while conducting the house proceedings.

He stated that they want a Speaker who is fair, allows the opposition to speak, and prioritizes the interests of the nation and Assam above party interests.

Referring to the ideological principles of the BJP, CM Sarma emphasized that the party believes in the motto ‘Nation First, Party Last,’ and Das should operate the house based on this philosophy.

The Chief Minister also noted that while a Speaker should remain politically neutral within the house, Das will continue to be an important political figure outside the assembly as an elected representative of the people.
