Ranchi, May 21: Jharkhand’s Governor and Chancellor of universities, Santosh Kumar Gangwar, emphasized the urgent need for significant reforms in the state’s higher education system. He stated that universities should not merely serve as centers for awarding degrees but should transform into robust hubs for innovation and skill development. The Governor made these remarks during the inaugural session of a two-day Vice-Chancellors’ conference organized by the Higher and Technical Education Department in Ranchi.
He pointed out that while the condition of school education is relatively better, the higher education sector still requires substantial improvements. The Governor expressed deep concern over the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in higher education in Jharkhand, which is significantly lower than the national average. He also highlighted the serious dropout issue in higher education. Due to a lack of quality education, timely examinations, and employment-oriented courses, many students are compelled to leave the state for better opportunities.
The Governor stated that the day students in Jharkhand feel they do not need to leave the state for better education will mark a successful effort. He urged Vice-Chancellors to take on the role of academic leaders, ensuring regular classes, timely examinations, and prompt publication of results.
He announced the implementation of the ‘Jharkhand State Universities Act 2026’ aimed at bringing transparency, accountability, and academic excellence to higher education. The Governor encouraged all Vice-Chancellors and university officials to study the new law seriously. He also stressed the importance of promoting research, innovation, startups, skill-based education, and industry linkages.
He reiterated that universities should evolve into centers for skill development and innovation rather than just degree-awarding institutions. On this occasion, the Governor’s Additional Chief Secretary, Dr. Nitin Kulkarni, stated that mere discussions are no longer sufficient; the focus must shift to results-oriented education.
He emphasized that universities should engage in research linked to societal and local issues. Dr. Kulkarni also noted that educators need to continuously update themselves with new technologies and artificial intelligence (AI). He highlighted the necessity of developing logical and analytical thinking among students.
