Kolkata, May 21: BJP legislator Chitta Mukherjee visited the border area following the West Bengal government’s decision to allocate land to the BSF for fencing along the India-Bangladesh border. He assessed the issues plaguing the border region and reiterated his commitment to enhancing security measures.
Speaking to the media after his visit, Mukherjee noted that security forces stationed at the border face significant challenges. The lack of basic amenities, including electricity, hampers the BSF personnel’s effectiveness. He pointed out that large tracts of land remain vacant, and the absence of fencing has led to increased incidents of infiltration and smuggling.
Mukherjee emphasized that completing the fencing would simplify the BSF’s operations, thereby strengthening national security and effectively curbing infiltration and smuggling activities.
He also mentioned that he would inform the state Chief Minister and the District Magistrate about the area’s conditions after his visit, aiming for a prompt resolution to the issues.
It is noteworthy that during the first cabinet meeting of the West Bengal government, a decision was made to allocate land to the Border Security Force (BSF) within 45 days for erecting barbed fencing along the currently unfenced international border with Bangladesh.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Wednesday that approximately 27 kilometers of land has officially been handed over to the BSF. He assured that the process of transferring the necessary land for this purpose would be completed within the next two weeks.
The Chief Minister stated that this initial transfer of 27 kilometers of land to the BSF marks the beginning of a larger process. With the support of the patriotic citizens of West Bengal and the efficient management of the state government officials, the entire process is expected to be completed within the next two weeks.
