Kolkata, May 21: A homemade bomb and a threatening letter were discovered outside the home of a BJP leader in the Bashirhat area of North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, on Thursday morning, causing panic among local residents.
According to locals, the incident occurred in Shasina village, where BJP booth president Anil Baran Mallik resides. Reports suggest that assailants took advantage of the darkness to place two homemade bombs at the entrance of his house before fleeing the scene.
The situation came to light when Mallik opened his door and found the explosives. As news spread, tension escalated in the area, prompting villagers to gather and alert the police.
Law enforcement and central forces stationed in the area quickly arrived on the scene and safely removed the explosives. A threatening letter tied to the balcony railing, along with bottles, was also found. Mallik indicated that this was not the first time he had faced intimidation.
Anil Baran Mallik stated that he has been associated with the BJP for nearly two decades and has never encountered such threats before. While he did not name anyone specifically, he suggested that the incident might be part of a political conspiracy.
Mallik claimed that the assailants were upset due to his long-standing role as the BJP booth president. When pressed about who might be behind the attack, he refrained from naming anyone, stating he had not seen anyone directly. However, he raised concerns about the involvement of Trinamool Congress workers.
Local BJP members condemned the incident and called for increased security for Mallik, asserting that a climate of fear has enveloped the community.
The police confirmed that a case has been registered based on a written complaint, and an investigation is underway. Additional security forces have been deployed in the area, and police conducted a flag march to restore public confidence.
Local BJP worker Chaudhary denounced the incident, claiming that the BJP received a significant number of votes in this booth, which has angered the Trinamool Congress.
Authorities are also questioning locals to determine the source of the bombs and who entered the house at midnight. The police assured that no one would be spared in the investigation.
