Mumbai, March 3: The opening ceremony of the 2026 Paralympic Winter Games in Milan-Cortina is just four days away. However, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East poses a risk of disruption to this quadrennial event, particularly affecting air travel from the region, as many teams have yet to arrive in Europe.
Several teams are expected to transit through major Middle Eastern hubs like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha, raising concerns about potential delays in their travel plans. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has stated that it is closely monitoring the situation arising from this crisis.
The IPC is particularly attentive to missile attacks in the Middle East and is gathering information to assess the impact on the Milan-Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games and the broader Paralympic movement.
In a release on Monday, the IPC expressed, “We believe this situation affects not only the National Paralympic Committees participating in the Games but also our larger membership. Our primary concern is the impact on individuals. Our sympathies are with those affected.”
The release further stated, “Regarding the Milan-Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games, we are evaluating the operational aspects, especially the effects on travel, while focusing on delivering the best Paralympic Winter Games possible. We aim to ensure that this event serves as a platform for social inclusion for the 1.3 billion people with disabilities worldwide.”
The IPC confirmed that it is in contact with delegations and working with the organizing committee to find solutions for those affected, acknowledging that some teams may experience delays in reaching Italy for the event.
The statement concluded, “We are in close communication with all delegations participating in the Games, as well as other stakeholders. While many teams are already in Europe training or holding camps, the closure of airspace in the Middle East is impacting some stakeholders’ arrivals. We assure you that we are diligently working with Milan-Cortina 2026 to find solutions for those affected.”
Despite the disruptions caused by the crisis, the IPC has committed to delivering “safe, secure, and spectacular Games.”
