Assam Cracks Down on Cattle Theft and Smuggling with 425 Cases Registered

Guwahati, May 22: Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken a firm stance against cattle smuggling and theft in the state. He emphasized that the Assam government is implementing a ‘zero tolerance’ policy, with law enforcement agencies on high alert in anticipation of upcoming festivals.

Since January 2026, a total of 856 individuals have been arrested in connection with cattle theft and smuggling cases, according to information shared by Chief Minister Sarma on the social media platform X. During this period, 425 cases have been officially registered.

The operations have led to the recovery of 4,355 cattle and the seizure of over 2,980 kilograms of beef. The Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to combating cattle smuggling, theft, and illegal beef trade. He has instructed police and security agencies to maintain heightened vigilance as the festive season approaches.

Data released by the government indicates that these actions took place between January 1 and May 19, 2026. Assam police and other agencies are actively working to curb cattle smuggling and illegal trade in the state.

Earlier, Chief Minister Sarma announced that the state government is preparing to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill in the upcoming assembly session. He expressed confidence that the bill would be passed, reaffirming the government’s commitment to implementing the UCC in Assam.

“We will present the UCC bill in this assembly session and ensure its passage. This was one of our longstanding commitments, and we are moving forward in that direction,” he stated.
