Mumbai, March 31: The Indian stock market is closed today in observance of Mahavir Jayanti. Consequently, there will be no buying, selling, or settlement processes on the BSE and NSE. Investors will need to wait until the next trading day, Wednesday, April 1, 2026, when the market will reopen as usual.
While trading will resume on April 1, it is important to note that there will be a ‘settlement holiday’ on that day. This means that investors can buy or sell shares, but the actual settlement of funds and shares will occur later.
Due to Mahavir Jayanti, changes will also affect the commodity market. The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will remain completely closed for the morning session, meaning no trading will take place during the day. However, trading will resume from 5 PM to 11:30 PM. On the other hand, the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Limited (NCDEX) will remain closed for the entire day.
In the meantime, the GIFT Nifty, which provides early signals for the Nifty index, showed a positive trend around 9:10 AM, trading up by nearly 1 percent or 250 points at 22,690.
Looking at global markets, there was a decline in the U.S. markets. The S&P 500 fell by 0.39 percent, while the Nasdaq closed down by 0.73 percent.
Asian markets also experienced weakness. The Nikkei dropped by 100 points or 0.23 percent, the Hang Seng fell by over 50 points or 0.24 percent, and the KOSPI declined by nearly 2 percent.
Crude oil prices also saw a dip. Brent crude fell by approximately 2.37 percent to $104.84 per barrel, while U.S. WTI crude traded down by about 2 percent at $100.83 per barrel.
Investors should be aware that trading opportunities will be limited this week. Following the holiday on March 31, the market will again be closed on April 3, 2026, due to Good Friday. Thus, out of five trading days this week, the market will only be open for three days. Notably, major global markets, including the U.S., will also be closed on Good Friday.
The next significant holiday after Good Friday will be on April 14, 2026, for Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti, when the stock market will be closed. Additionally, the market will not operate on other occasions throughout 2026, including Maharashtra Day, Bakri Eid, Muharram, Ganesh Chaturthi, Gandhi Jayanti, Dussehra, Diwali, Guru Purnima, and Christmas.
Due to the consecutive holidays, market volatility may increase this week. Investors should consider these holidays and settlement rules when planning their trading and investment strategies to avoid any inconvenience.
