
Jaipur, May 15: In a tragic incident following the cancellation of the NEET exam, a medical aspirant reportedly took his own life at a coaching center in Sikar, Rajasthan, on Friday. The news has sent shockwaves across the country, igniting anger and uncertainty among students.
The deceased, identified as Pradeep Mahich, was found hanging in his rented room located in the Jaladhari Nagar area on Piprali Road. Family members revealed that Pradeep had been under severe mental stress since the exam’s cancellation.
According to police and family accounts, he used his sister’s dupatta to hang himself from the ceiling fan while alone in his room. Pradeep had been preparing for NEET in Sikar for the past three years and was reportedly expecting to score over 650 marks in the NEET-UG 2026.
His family believed he had a strong chance of securing admission to a government medical college this year. The cancellation of the exam left them in deep shock. This incident has created an atmosphere of grief and anger at the coaching center.
Family members shared that Pradeep lived on the fourth floor of a residential building with his two sisters, both of whom were preparing for railway recruitment exams. On Friday afternoon, while his younger sister was in coaching class and his elder sister was in the bathroom, the tragic event unfolded. Upon returning, the elder sister found Pradeep hanging from the ceiling fan.
She immediately cut the dupatta with scissors and alerted the landlord and police. He was rushed to SK Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. Pradeep hailed from Kanika Ki Dhani village in the Guhja Gorji area of Jhunjhunu district.
His father, Rajesh Kumar Meghwal, shared that Pradeep was the only son among four children, carrying the family’s hopes and dreams. The family relies on farming and daily wage labor, and relatives have described their financial situation as dire. A large number of grieving family members and local community members gathered outside the mortuary at SK Hospital.
According to relatives, Pradeep had been withdrawn and depressed in the days following the NEET exam’s cancellation. Based on the family’s complaint, the Industrial Town police have initiated an investigation into the case.
