Kolkata, May 15: Indian Railways has approved three new projects for West Bengal, as announced on Friday. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari received three separate letters from Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw regarding these initiatives.
The first project involves the approval of a new railway line connecting New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri in the northern region of West Bengal.
The second project pertains to the operation of a new express train, the Santragachi-Khatipura Express, which will connect the Santragachi area near Kolkata to Khatipura in Jaipur, Rajasthan, passing through Kharagpur.
The third project focuses on the construction of a 107-kilometer third railway line from Salboni in West Midnapore district to Adra Junction in Purulia district, with approval for the final location survey and detailed project report.
In a related announcement, the Railway Minister stated on social media that work on the long-awaited Kolkata Metro connection near Salt Lake in Chingrihata will commence on Friday night. This project had been stalled during the previous Trinamool Congress government led by Mamata Banerjee due to the Kolkata Police’s refusal to grant permission for traffic restrictions necessary for the work.
The Railway Minister emphasized that the government in West Bengal has changed, and a “double-engine government” is now in power. He noted that the long-standing issue in Chingrihata has been resolved, and permission from the Kolkata Police has been obtained, allowing the work to begin.
To complete the Kolkata Metro connection, two girders need to be installed between pillar numbers 317, 318, and 319 in the Chingrihata Metro section, which required traffic restrictions. The previous state government and Kolkata Police had not granted the necessary permissions. After a prolonged legal dispute, the Kolkata Police finally approved the request, allowing the installation work to start on Friday night.
