Srinagar, May 15: The National Women’s Commission is set to hold the fourth edition of “Shakti Samvad” on May 16-17 in Srinagar. This event will bring together state women’s commissions from across the country to discuss women’s rights, institutional coordination, and mechanisms for enhancing women’s safety and empowerment.
“Shakti Samvad” is a significant consultative initiative aimed at fostering close coordination and ongoing engagement between the National Women’s Commission and state commissions. The first edition took place in Ayodhya, followed by events in Mumbai and New Delhi. The Srinagar edition reinforces the National Women’s Commission’s commitment to collaborative policy-making and institutional strengthening for women’s welfare at the state level.
This national-level consultation reflects the growing involvement of institutions and stakeholders in Jammu and Kashmir. It highlights the importance of inclusive dialogue and coordinated governance in advancing women’s rights and access to justice.
The inaugural session will be addressed by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences, and Personnel in the Prime Minister’s Office. Vijaya Rahatkar, Chairperson of the National Women’s Commission, will also speak, emphasizing the need for accountable governance, strong institutional collaboration, and grassroots mechanisms to protect women’s rights and dignity.
Senior government officials, legal experts, law enforcement representatives, policymakers, and members of state women’s commissions from across the country will participate in the event.
The two-day consultation will feature discussions on various topics, including a brief overview of state progress, a review of state laws concerning women’s rights, recent Supreme Court and High Court rulings affecting women, legal and institutional responses to stalking, and the implications of new labor codes on women’s rights, welfare, and workplace dignity.
These discussions aim to strengthen policy coordination, improve grievance redress mechanisms, promote legal awareness, and ensure effective implementation of women-centric laws and welfare measures. The consultation will also provide a platform for state women’s commissions to share best practices and strategies to address emerging challenges related to women’s safety, workplace dignity, cyber concerns, and access to justice.
As part of her visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Vijaya Rahatkar will participate in several programs and institutional meetings on May 19. These include a gender sensitivity and women’s welfare awareness program at Sher-e-Kashmir University, a public hearing in Srinagar for direct grievance redressal and dialogue with women, a meeting with the Chief Secretary and senior administrative officials to discuss women’s welfare and institutional coordination issues, and the distribution of the “Lal Ded National Award.”
The consultation will conclude with a farewell ceremony and closing session, presenting key recommendations and a roadmap for ongoing collaboration between the National Women’s Commission and state women’s commissions to advance women’s rights and empowerment across the country.
