Canadian Hindu Organizations Condemn Khalistani Protests Outside Temples

Ottawa, April 3: Hindu-supporting organizations worldwide have strongly condemned the Khalistani extremist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) for calling for protests outside Hindu temples in Canada.

These organizations have expressed concerns over potential disturbances and urged authorities to ensure the safety of religious sites and communities.

SFJ has announced “Khalistan Zindabad” rallies on April 5 in front of the Triveni Temple in Brampton and the Laxmi Narayan Temple in Surrey, targeting the Hindu Canadian Foundation (HCF).

HCF has objected to the planned rallies, stating that targeting the Hindu community due to their historical roots in India or local cultural identity is clearly an act of xenophobia and Hinduphobia.

The organization has appealed to Canadian police to ensure security at the temple premises and for devotees throughout the day on April 5. They highlighted that SFJ has a history of violent and extremist behavior.

Meanwhile, the Coalition of Hindus of North America (COHNA) has also criticized SFJ’s plans to protest outside Hindu temples. They expressed concern over the group’s past record of violence, including a medieval-style attack on Hindu devotees and an incident at temples on November 3, 2024.

COHNA stated that Hindu devotees who visit temples for prayer and spiritual connection often face aggressive protests, violent situations, and glorification of terrorism at the temple gates.

They remarked, “This is nothing but religious extremism and targeted persecution disguised as ‘freedom of speech’ and ‘political expression.’ It should be noted that the Hindu Canadian Foundation also has the right to free speech, and threatening protests against an entire community to silence one organization violates the fundamental principles of fairness in Canada.”

COHNA welcomed and appreciated the Peel Regional Police’s commitment to enforce by-laws related to “public nuisance demonstrations” to protect worship sites in Brampton. They noted that by creating a 100-meter safety zone around the Triveni Temple, Canadian authorities have finally acknowledged that no group has the right to physically or mentally encircle others under the guise of free speech.

The organization has called on Surrey police and officials to implement similar security measures for the Laxmi Narayan Temple immediately.
