Kolkata, May 17: Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has written to the Chief Minister of West Bengal regarding a notice issued by the state government on May 13 concerning animal slaughter. He expressed that the notice has created confusion and discontent, particularly in the Murshidabad district.
In his letter, Chowdhury stated, “I want to draw your attention to the public notice regarding the ‘Animal Slaughter Guidelines’ issued by the West Bengal government on May 13, 2026, which is causing confusion and dissatisfaction among the people that needs to be addressed.”
The Congress leader emphasized, “We all know that West Bengal is a state with diverse communities and groups, similar to other states in the country, where people follow different cultural traditions and customs according to their religious beliefs. Murshidabad is a district with a significant minority population. Therefore, this notice related to the ‘guidelines’ has raised concerns within the community.”
The state government mandated that a certificate must be obtained before the slaughter of bulls, calves, cows, buffaloes, and other animals. The notice prohibits the public slaughter of these animals and instructs inspecting officials not to be obstructed in enforcing the order.
Chowdhury also urged the Chief Minister to intervene and eliminate the confusion among the people. He suggested that the district administration could identify and demarcate specific locations where people can perform their religious customs without any hassle, especially in areas like Murshidabad.
He wrote, “The identified locations will be used solely for religious and traditional activities. This will help alleviate the concerns and confusion prevalent among the minority community in Murshidabad, as they follow certain traditional practices. I hope you will intervene to resolve the unrest and confusion spreading in the district.”
