Andreeva and Schneider Claim Doubles Title at Italian Open

Rome, May 17: The Russian duo of Mira Andreeva and Diana Schneider triumphed in the women’s doubles final at the Italian Open on Sunday. They defeated the pair of Cristina Bucsa and Nicole Melichar-Martinez with a score of 6-3, 6-3 in a match that lasted 69 minutes.

This victory marks their second WTA 1000 title together and their third overall as a team. Following this win, their reputation as one of the most formidable pairs on the tour has been solidified ahead of the upcoming Roland Garros. The triumph in Rome also alleviated the disappointment they faced earlier this month in Madrid, where they lost in the final to doubles specialists Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend.

From the outset, the Russian pair maintained complete control of the match with aggressive returns and excellent net play, leaving Bucsa and Melichar-Martinez with little opportunity to find their rhythm. After securing the first set with ease, they clinched the second set to claim the title.

Since teaming up, Andreeva and Schneider have now won three titles, including Brisbane and Miami. Their impressive journey also features a memorable semifinal victory against the second-seeded Siniakova and Townsend. They have become the first team this year to win a WTA 1000 doubles title, following their success in Dubai, aside from the experienced Czech-American duo.

For Andreeva, this title symbolizes a remarkable comeback after a disappointing performance in singles on clay courts. She faced defeat in the Madrid singles final and was eliminated early in Rome by Coco Gauff. Meanwhile, Schneider was knocked out in singles by Naomi Osaka.

However, together, this pair has once again made a significant mark in doubles. The Paris 2024 Olympic silver medalists, Andreeva and Schneider, are now heading towards the French Open with rising expectations and newfound confidence in their pursuit of another major clay-court title.
