New Delhi: Manipur has emerged as a powerhouse in Indian sports over recent years. Athletes from the state have excelled in traditional as well as diverse sports at national and international levels. Among them, Anuradha Devi Thokchom stands out as a prominent name in hockey.
Anuradha Devi Thokchom was born on 2 February 1989 in Taobul, Manipur. Her family faced financial hardships; her father, Thokchom Churamani, worked as a rickshaw puller. Anuradha has three siblings, and her elder brother was a football player. The family was also involved in farming and fishery.
Hockey was not a popular sport in Manipur, where football dominated. However, inspired and guided by her siblings, Anuradha took up hockey at a very young age. She began playing at the Taobul Youth Club and later joined the Posterior Hockey Academy in Imphal, Manipur.
She made her international debut at the 2006 Women’s Hockey Champions Trophy. Playing as a forward, Anuradha has represented India in over 80 matches. She was part of the Indian women’s hockey team at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where India qualified after a gap of 36 years. Commentators praised her contribution during the 2014-15 Women’s Hockey World League, where the Indian team finished fifth and secured Olympic qualification.
Anuradha was a member of the Indian squad that won the bronze medal at the 2013 Asia Cup in Kuala Lumpur and clinched gold at the 2016 Asian Champions Trophy in Singapore. Following this historic gold medal victory, she retired from professional hockey. Currently, she serves in the clerical department of Indian Railways.
