Indian Players Exit British Open Squash Championship in Second Round

Birmingham, June 2: The British Open Squash Championship saw the end of India’s challenge in the men’s draw on Tuesday. Abhay Singh and Veer Chotrani faced defeats against higher-ranked opponents in the second round.

World number 24 Abhay fought hard against Egyptian star Mohamed Zakaria but ultimately lost in a closely contested match that lasted four games, with scores of 9-11, 4-11, 11-7, and 10-12. Abhay started strong but lost the first two games. He made a powerful comeback, winning the third game 11-7, signaling a potential turnaround. The fourth game was fiercely competitive, but Zakaria showcased superior skills at crucial moments, winning the game 12-10 and securing the match.

With this defeat, Abhay’s impressive tournament run came to an end. He had started the competition on a high note, defeating Colombia’s Matias Nudsen in straight games in the first round. Abhay displayed excellent form, winning 11-8, 11-5, and 11-4, which earned him a spot in the next round against the world number 8, Mohamed Zakaria. Despite his best efforts, Abhay’s journey ended with a narrow loss.

Chotrani’s journey also concluded in the second round, where he faced world number 40 Joel Makin. Chotrani put up a tough fight in the first two games but ultimately lost to the experienced Makin, with scores of 10-12, 9-11, and 3-11.

Chotrani had secured his place in the second round with a remarkable victory over Pakistan’s Noor Zaman, winning 1-8, 12-14, 11-6, and 11-7. However, Makin’s consistent performance and experience proved decisive, allowing him to advance to the last 16.
