Kolkata, June 2: A former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA from West Bengal‘s East Bardhaman district has been arrested on corruption charges. Police confirmed on Tuesday that Debaprasad Bag, the former MLA from Kalna, was apprehended following the arrest of another ex-MLA, Khokan Das, from Bardhaman South.
According to police reports, a team from Nadan Ghat police station raided Bag’s residence on Monday night. During the operation, he was taken into custody and formally arrested the following day.
Bag faces allegations of hoarding government relief supplies and sports equipment intended for youth at his home. Instead of distributing these items to those in need, they were reportedly stored at his private residence.
Police officials are currently interrogating Bag to determine the purpose behind keeping government materials at his home and to investigate whether any other individuals or networks are involved in this case.
Local sources indicate that there has been longstanding discontent regarding Bag in the area. Questions have been raised about his lifestyle and wealth, but residents were hesitant to speak out due to the prevailing political climate. Following the rise of the BJP government in the state, locals have begun to voice significant allegations of corruption against him.
As news of the police and central paramilitary forces arriving at his home spread on Monday night, a large crowd gathered outside. According to local residents, Bag and his family remained inside their home with the door locked for an extended period after learning of the police presence. Eventually, the police took him into custody late that night.
Notably, Pranab Roy, the TMC president of Kalna-II block, was also recently arrested for alleged irregularities in the distribution of government relief materials.
In connection with this case, a search operation was conducted at the residence of former Purba Bardhaman MLA Tapan Chatterjee, where investigators claim to have recovered a significant amount of government supplies.
Investigators believe that more cases related to alleged irregularities in the distribution of government schemes and relief materials may emerge. However, the district TMC leadership has yet to issue an official response regarding the police actions and raids.
