BJD Forms Fact-Finding Team to Investigate Custodial Death in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, June 2: The opposition party Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has established a fact-finding team to investigate the custodial death of a 32-year-old differently-abled man at the Kabisuryanagar police station in Ganjam district, Odisha.

According to a statement released by the party, the team will visit the victim’s ancestral village and meet with family members and other individuals to uncover the facts surrounding this unfortunate incident.

The statement noted, “With the approval of BJD president Naveen Patnaik, a fact-finding team has been formed to meet with the family of the deceased, Sushant Sahu, who died in custody at the Kabisuryanagar police station. The team will gather facts related to the incident, engage with local residents and other relevant individuals, and submit a detailed report to Patnaik.”

This 17-member fact-finding team includes senior BJD leaders such as Ramesh Chyau Patnaik, Brijhu Baksipatra, Pramila Bisoi, Ranjita Sahu, Latika Pradhan, and Purna Chandra Swain.

The regional party has expressed deep concern over the allegations related to the incident and reiterated its commitment to protecting human rights, delivering justice to victims, and upholding the rule of law. The party stated that it stands in full solidarity with the victim’s family during this difficult time.

According to family members, the victim, Sushant Sahu, was a resident of Subalaya village in Ganjam district. He was brought to the Kabisuryanagar police station on May 25 during a raid and was detained for questioning related to an illegal stone blasting case. Two individuals had already been arrested in connection with this case, but Sushant’s involvement had not been established. Allegations suggest that he was tortured during his seven-day detention.

He was handed over to his family in critical condition on Sunday. After receiving initial treatment at Aska Hospital, he was referred to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, where doctors declared him dead on Monday.

This tragic incident has sparked widespread outrage, leading to the suspension of three police officers and the recall of an under-training IPS officer who had independent charge of the Kabisuryanagar police station.
