Germany Eases Transit Visa Requirements for Indian Travelers

New Delhi, June 2: The German Embassy in New Delhi announced on Tuesday that Indian citizens will no longer need a transit visa when traveling through German airports on their way to other countries. A layover refers to a temporary stop at an intermediate location before reaching the final destination.

The embassy stated, “The removal of the so-called airport transit visa requirement for Indian nationals was announced in the Federal Law Gazette on June 2 and will take effect from June 3.”

According to the Federal Republic’s public gazette, “This decision stems from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to India in January this year. It reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to deepen German-Indian relations, facilitate people-to-people movement, and strengthen economic ties.”

During this visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chancellor Merz welcomed the continuous increase in mutual trade and investment, noting that trade between the two countries is expected to reach record heights in 2024 and continue positively into 2025.

India and Germany have signed several agreements in areas such as trade, technology, health, and renewable energy. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, both sides finalized 19 agreements and made various policy announcements aimed at enhancing strategic, economic, and people-to-people cooperation.

Both leaders reaffirmed their strong support for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) and emphasized its potential to reshape and promote global commerce, connectivity, and prosperity. They also expressed anticipation for the first IMEEC ministerial meeting to take concrete steps forward.

In a joint statement, the leaders welcomed the signing of a joint intent to create a roadmap for defense industrial cooperation. This initiative aims to promote long-term industrial collaboration, including technological partnerships and co-development of defense platforms and equipment. India welcomed Germany’s efforts for expedited clearance of defense equipment exports.
