Hansi, June 2: Protests in Chanout village of Hansi district, Haryana, over a drinking water crisis have escalated into a significant public movement. On Monday, villagers and farmers uprooted a pipeline, prompting police to file cases against 31 named individuals and several unidentified persons.
SP Vinod Kumar addressed reporters, stating that strict action has been taken regarding the protests in Chanout village. The cases involve charges of damaging public property, disrupting law and order, and blocking roads. The police have issued a warning that further disturbances will lead to even stricter actions.
He mentioned that authorities had previously engaged with the farmers and villagers, advising them to protest peacefully without taking the law into their own hands. Despite this, the protesters acted unlawfully, necessitating the filing of cases. A team will soon be formed to apprehend those involved.
SP Vinod Kumar reported that the demonstrators had uprooted the pipeline being laid towards Hansi and obstructed the Hansi-Barwala road by placing pipes on it, causing traffic disruptions. Police arrived on the scene to restore order. He cautioned that any further lawlessness would result in action.
In light of the escalating protests, a heavy police presence has been deployed, and administrative officials are closely monitoring the situation. Security measures have been intensified to maintain law and order.
It is noteworthy that villagers have been on strike for over 17 days, demanding that the pipeline being constructed under the Bhakra drinking water project also provide a permanent water connection to Chanout village. They argue that since the pipeline runs through their village, they should not be deprived of this essential service.
