Kabul, February 19: The Afghanistan Media Support Organization (AMSO) has raised alarms regarding the worsening conditions faced by Afghan journalists stranded in Pakistan and Iran while awaiting humanitarian visas. Local media reports indicate that many journalists, who fled Afghanistan due to security threats, are now at risk of deportation from their host countries as their resettlement remains pending.
According to a report by Afghanistan’s leading news agency, Khaama Press, AMSO has stated that prolonged administrative delays and a lack of clear timelines for the visa process are severely impacting the mental and physical well-being of these journalists. The organization has specifically appealed to Brazilian authorities and diplomatic missions to expedite the processing of humanitarian visa applications and provide clear information regarding the resettlement process.
Many Afghan journalists, who escaped the Taliban regime, are currently residing in neighboring countries, Pakistan and Iran, where their legal status and livelihoods remain uncertain. AMSO and international rights organizations assert that timely resettlement is crucial to protect them from ongoing insecurity and legal risks abroad.
On February 2, AMSO reported that in the past two weeks, Pakistani police had detained five Afghan journalists. Among those detained were journalist Sameem Forough Faizi and cameraman Atullah Shirzad, while others chose not to disclose their identities for security reasons. Although they were later released, AMSO noted that arbitrary detention and insecurity continue to pose serious concerns for Afghan journalists residing in Pakistan.
The organization also highlighted that many Afghan refugees in Pakistan are facing difficulties in renewing their visas, leading to instability and legal uncertainty for journalists and their families.
Human rights groups have warned that the increasing deportation actions and stringent immigration regulations have further deteriorated the situation for Afghan journalists seeking safety and resettlement abroad. AMSO has called on international media and human rights organizations to support Afghan journalists facing legal and security challenges in Pakistan.
