
New Delhi, June 2: India and Myanmar held their 8th bilateral meeting focused on drug control cooperation in New Delhi on Tuesday.
The Indian delegation was led by Anurag Garg, Director General of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). The Myanmar delegation was headed by Brigadier General Thant Lwin Maung, Joint Secretary of the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control (CCDAC).
Both parties reviewed the changing landscape of drug trafficking in the region. They discussed enhancing cooperation in intelligence sharing, coordinated operations, precursor chemical control, tackling synthetic drugs, darknet trafficking, illegal opium cultivation, and capacity building.
During the discussions, India and Myanmar reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening cooperation against international drug trafficking and organized crime.
Notably, Myanmar’s President U Min Aung Hlaing is on his first official visit to India from May 30 to June 3. Accompanying him are ministers from various ministries, including the President’s Office, Foreign Affairs, Finance and Revenue, Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, and Industry, as well as the Governor of Myanmar’s Central Bank.
The Myanmar delegation also includes business representatives from sectors such as agriculture, pharmaceuticals, energy, banking, construction, IT, communications, trade, and logistics, along with members of the Myanmar-India Friendship Association.
On June 1, India’s Prime Minister and Myanmar’s President held talks, reviewing bilateral, regional, and global issues of mutual interest and strategizing for future relations. The Prime Minister hosted a lunch in honor of the guest. That same day, India’s President Droupadi Murmu welcomed the Myanmar President. Previously, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met separately with the Myanmar President.
The President of Myanmar also extended an invitation to the Indian Prime Minister to visit Myanmar on mutually agreed dates.
