Rome, June 3: Two Pakistani nationals have been arrested in connection with the horrific murder of four migrants in the town of Amendolara, located in Italy’s Calabria region. According to local media reports on Tuesday, the victims included three Afghan nationals who were set on fire while still alive.
A survivor of the incident recounted to a local journalist that the attackers doused their vehicle with petrol and ignited it after the migrants refused to pay them.
“I witnessed that terrifying scene, and I am alive by some miracle,” said the lone survivor, an Afghan national who had been living with the victims in Villapiana, as reported by the Adnkronos news agency.
The survivor told journalist Francesco Salvatore, “I thought I was going to die.” He claimed that three of the victims were Afghan citizens. The two arrested suspects had demanded payment for transportation, and when the migrants declined, they carried out the gruesome act.
He explained that the attackers first poured petrol into the car and then set it ablaze with a lighter, resulting in the four migrants being burned alive. The survivor managed to escape by breaking a window.
He also mentioned that the Pakistani nationals had threatened him and others with knives and guns to force them into labor without payment.
According to La Milano News, the charred bodies were discovered inside a minivan parked near a gas station along the Ionian State Road 106 in Amendolara on Monday.
Authorities were alerted to the vehicle fire, prompting firefighters to respond and uncover the bodies. The two suspects were apprehended in Villapiana and taken to the Cosenza police headquarters, where they are currently being interrogated by the Flying Squad.
