Vipul Appointed as Indias Next Ambassador to Saudi Arabia

Riyadh, June 3: Vipul, currently serving as India’s Ambassador to Qatar, has been appointed as the next Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. He will succeed Suhail Khan, who has been in the role since 2023.

Vipul, an Indian Foreign Service officer from the 1998 batch, has previously held positions at Indian embassies in Cairo, Colombo, Geneva, and Dubai. Throughout his diplomatic career, he has demonstrated exceptional skills across various sectors, including politics, business, development, disarmament, international security, and media.

He has also held significant roles within the Ministry of External Affairs. From 2014 to 2017, he served as Director/Joint Secretary and later as the Indian Consul General in Dubai from 2017 to 2020. Most recently, he was Joint Secretary (Gulf Region) at the Ministry from 2020 to 2023.

On August 17, 2023, Vipul presented his credentials to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani as the Indian Ambassador to Qatar. He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and an MBA from the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad.

Hailing from Bihar, Vipul will take over from Dr. Suhail Ejaz Khan, a native of Madhya Pradesh, who is set to return to India after completing his term in Riyadh.

India and Saudi Arabia share a historic, strategic, and multifaceted relationship. Their cooperation spans energy, trade, investment, defense, security, counter-terrorism efforts, technology, and people-to-people connections.

Saudi Arabia is one of India’s key energy partners, supplying a significant portion of its oil and gas needs. Conversely, India is an important trading partner for Saudi Arabia. In recent years, both nations have enhanced collaboration in areas such as investment, infrastructure, renewable energy, digital technology, and food security.

The defense and security ties between the two countries have also strengthened, gaining momentum with the establishment of a strategic partnership in 2010 and the subsequent formation of the “Strategic Partnership Council,” which has institutionalized bilateral cooperation.
