Kolkata, August 4 (H.S.) – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in West Bengal, warning of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in the coming hours. The weather changes are being driven by the combined impact of a cyclonic circulation and an active monsoon trough across the region.

According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, the upper atmospheric cyclonic circulation has shifted from northeast Bihar and is now centred over northwest Bihar and adjoining northeastern Uttar Pradesh, extending up to 4.5 km above sea level, and tilting southwestward.
Simultaneously, the monsoon trough — extending from Amritsar, Chandigarh, Shamli, Shahjahanpur, Lucknow, Chhapra, Bankura, and Canning to the northeastern Bay of Bengal — is actively drawing in moisture-laden winds. This has led to widespread rainfall from north to south Bengal.
Heavy Rainfall Forecast in North Bengal
The weather office has predicted continuous heavy rainfall in the coming days for North Bengal, especially in hilly and foothill areas like:
Darjeeling
Jalpaiguri
Kalimpong
Alipurduar
Cooch Behar
These regions may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall (7–20 cm). Moderate to heavy rainfall (7–11 cm) is also likely in both Dinajpurs and Malda districts.
South Bengal to Witness Thunderstorms and Light to Moderate Rain
In South Bengal, light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is expected to continue through the week. On Monday, districts including:
North 24 Parganas
South 24 Parganas
East Medinipur
Purba Bardhaman
Nadia
could experience rain accompanied by wind speeds of 30–40 km/h.
Scattered rainfall is also forecasted for Tuesday and Wednesday in various districts, while heavy rain (7–20 cm) is likely on Thursday in parts of Nadia and North 24 Parganas.
Kolkata Weather Update
Kolkata continues to receive rainfall, bringing some relief in temperature but increasing humidity levels. The city recorded 37.3 mm of rainfall from Sunday night to Monday morning, which cooled the atmosphere but added to the discomfort caused by high moisture.
Maximum temperature: 31.6°C (0.9°C below normal)
Minimum temperature: 26.1°C (0.4°C below normal)
Maximum humidity: 97%
Minimum humidity: 72%
Authorities have advised residents across the state, especially in vulnerable and low-lying areas, to stay alert and follow weather advisories.
