Controversy Erupts Over Newlyweds Death in Bhopal: SIT Investigation Launched Amid Allegations of Cover-Up

Bhopal, May 19: A significant controversy has arisen following the death of 33-year-old Twisha Sharma in Bhopal. Allegations of dowry harassment, pressure from an influential family, and demands for an investigation under the Supreme Court’s supervision have intensified. The situation escalated when a local court denied anticipatory bail to her husband, advocate Samarth Singh.

Twisha, who previously worked as an actress and model, was employed at a private company in Delhi before her marriage to Samarth Singh on December 9, 2025. Tragically, just six months after their wedding, she died on the night of May 12 at her in-laws’ residence in Katara Hills, Bhopal.

An FIR has been filed against Samarth Singh and his mother, retired judge Giribala Singh, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Dowry Prohibition Act for dowry death and harassment.

On Monday, Additional Sessions Judge Pallavi Dwivedi rejected Samarth Singh’s anticipatory bail plea, citing “unusual circumstances” surrounding Twisha’s death within six months of marriage and serious allegations against the accused.

The court noted that witness statements, the FIR, and WhatsApp chats primarily implicate Samarth Singh. Given the gravity of the accusations and the ongoing investigation, granting anticipatory bail was deemed inappropriate.

According to police reports, Samarth Singh has been on the run since the incident. Bhopal police have announced a reward of ₹10,000 for information leading to his arrest. His mobile phone is switched off, and multiple police teams are searching for him.

Giribala Singh, a retired judge of the Bhopal District Court and currently the head of the Bhopal Consumer Court, has already secured anticipatory bail.

The case has garnered significant attention due to the accused family’s influence. Twisha’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, has alleged that connections within the judiciary, police, and medical administration are hindering the investigation. He claims that senior officials are attempting to shield the accused, and his family faced difficulties in filing the FIR.

Navnidhi Sharma has now appealed to the Governor of Madhya Pradesh for intervention, demanding that Giribala Singh be removed or suspended from her position until the investigation is complete. He argues that her continued presence could compromise the investigation, witness testimonies, and forensic procedures. The petition references Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution, calling for a fair and transparent inquiry.

The most significant controversy revolves around the circumstances of Twisha’s death. The defense claims that on May 12, Twisha visited a beauty parlor and later went for a walk. Upon returning home, her family found her hanging from an exercise band on the terrace with an iron rod. They assert that attempts were made to save her before she was taken to AIIMS Bhopal.

However, Twisha’s family vehemently disputes this claim, alleging that she was subjected to continuous mental and physical harassment for dowry. They also allege that she was pressured to undergo an abortion.

Court records indicate that the accused questioned the paternity of the child Twisha was carrying and physically assaulted her multiple times.

The prosecution has presented WhatsApp messages in court, allegedly sent by Twisha to her mother days before her death. In a message dated May 9, she requested her mother to come and take her away, describing her life as hell and stating that her husband was not speaking to her.

The defense has denied all allegations, asserting that the WhatsApp messages have been tampered with and are unreliable.

Disputes have also arisen regarding the post-mortem report. The initial report cited hanging as the cause of death but also noted multiple injury marks on the body.

Twisha’s family has refused to claim the body and is demanding a second post-mortem at AIIMS Delhi, alleging that the local administration cannot conduct an impartial investigation.

Meanwhile, Bhopal police have formed a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by ACP Rajneesh Kashyap, to investigate allegations of dowry harassment, assault, and evidence tampering.
