Tensions Rise in Lucknow Over Demolition Controversy, Lawyers Accuse Police of Brutality

Lucknow, May 19: Tensions escalated in Lucknow following the demolition of illegal chambers and shops outside the district court, ordered by the Allahabad High Court. This incident occurred just a day after the demolition took place, leading to significant unrest among the legal community.

Members of the Bar Association have accused the administration of brutally charging protesting lawyers with batons. The demolition operation, conducted by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation under heavy police presence, faced strong opposition from lawyers, resulting in clashes and heated arguments with security personnel.

On Monday, Bar Association Secretary Jitendra Yadav claimed that several lawyers were injured during the police action. He condemned the administration for not providing adequate time for lawyers to remove their belongings before the demolition began.

Yadav stated to a news agency, “The High Court issued an order, and we respect the judiciary. We have been waiting for its implementation for the past two and a half to three months. However, we strongly condemn the baton charge against our esteemed members by the administration.”

He alleged that lawyers were prevented from retrieving essential items from their chambers. “We are protesting because the administration did not allow our respected lawyers to remove laptops, air conditioners, furniture, and many important files from their chambers,” he added.

Yadav reported that during the demolition process, police used excessive force, resulting in injuries to many lawyers. “The police charged so violently that several of our lawyers were injured, with some suffering fractures and currently hospitalized,” he said.

He clarified that the lawyers were not opposing the High Court’s directives but were objecting to the manner in which the demolition was carried out. “There was no order for a baton charge. The court only ordered the demolition. It is not that we do not respect the court; the entire nation respects the judiciary, and so do we. However, we vehemently condemn the baton charge against our esteemed members. I denounce this incident,” he stated.
