Guwahati, May 19: Congress leader and AICC General Secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala has been summoned to appear before the Crime Branch on May 23. This summons is linked to an alleged passport controversy involving Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, as confirmed by Assam police.
Sources indicate that during an inquiry, Congress leader Pawan Khera reportedly mentioned Surjewala’s name in connection with the case. Following this, investigative agencies have intensified their probe into the matter. They are also examining whether Gaurav Gogoi and Randeep Singh Surjewala were involved in planning a larger conspiracy related to this controversy. Assam police stated that all aspects of the case are under investigation, and further actions will be based on the findings.
It is noteworthy that during a press conference in the national capital ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, Pawan Khera alleged that CM Sarma’s wife holds passports from three countries: the UAE, Antigua, and Egypt. He also claimed that certain foreign assets, including properties in Dubai, were not disclosed in official filings. Additionally, he alleged that a company registered in Wyoming, USA, is linked to Sarma and involves financial transactions worth thousands of crores of dollars.
Khera described this situation as a case of asset concealment and has requested the Ministry of Home Affairs to initiate a Special Investigation Team (SIT) inquiry.
In response, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma has dismissed all allegations as baseless and malicious. She further claimed that the documents presented during the press conference were forged, featuring fabricated seals and QR codes designed to resemble government records.
