Madikeri, May 19: A tragic incident occurred at the Dubare Elephant Camp in Karnataka, where a female tourist from Tamil Nadu lost her life during a fight between two elephants on Monday. An official confirmed the details of the incident.
The victim, identified as 33-year-old Jinmu, was caught under one of the elephants during the altercation, leading to her untimely death. Her husband, Joyal, sustained serious injuries and has been admitted to the Kushalnagar government hospital for treatment.
According to police reports, the couple had arrived at the Dubare Elephant Camp on Monday morning. Initially, they took pictures with the trained elephants. Later, while mahouts were taking the elephants for a bath, they entered the water along with other tourists to assist in the cleaning process.
During this activity, two captive elephants, Martanda and Kanjan, suddenly began to fight. Despite repeated attempts by the mahouts to control them, the elephants continued their struggle.
In the ensuing chaos, Martanda fell on Jinmu, resulting in her death at the scene, while her husband was severely injured. Fellow tourists and officials quickly rescued the couple from the water and rushed them to the hospital.
Sources revealed that Kanjan had previously caused panic during the Mysore Dasara festival when it bolted out of the Mysore Palace premises after a fight with another elephant. Reports indicate that Kanjan has attacked other elephants at the camp before.
The police have initiated an investigation into the incident. The Dubare Camp is known for training elephants for the famous Mysore Dasara festival and offers hundreds of tourists a chance to interact closely with these majestic animals. It serves as a unique eco-tourism destination and a center for studying elephant behavior.
