May 22, 2025 | New Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a widespread alert for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds across 17 Indian states till May 25, signaling an early and intense pre-monsoon activity. From Western Uttar Pradesh to coastal Karnataka, changing weather patterns have brought both relief from heat and temporary chaos in several regions.

Pre-Monsoon Showers Provide Relief, Trigger Local Disruptions
In areas like Western Uttar Pradesh, overnight rains and strong winds up to 60 km/h brought down trees, poles, and power lines, disrupting pedestrian and vehicular movement. However, as the storm settled, residents enjoyed a much-needed drop in temperature, marking a dramatic shift from the intense heatwave earlier this week.
Similar scenes were reported across northeastern states, where rain with lightning and thunderstorms significantly cooled temperatures. In South India, morning downpours from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu led to a dip in daytime heat, though warnings remain in place for continued instability.
States on High Alert for Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms
The IMD has issued alerts for the following regions:
-
Karnataka (coastal & valley areas): Over 204.5 mm of rain expected
-
Konkan & Goa: Likely to experience intense thunderstorms and rain
-
Assam and Meghalaya: Under heavy rainfall and storm warning
-
Central Maharashtra & North Karnataka: Winds up to 60 km/h, with possible flash floods
-
Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Marathwada: Heavy rains with lightning and thunder
-
Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim: Up to 115.5 mm of rainfall
Early Monsoon Expected in Kerala
The southwest monsoon is expected to arrive in Kerala within 4–5 days, slightly earlier than the usual June 1 onset. The IMD has indicated that the current weather system across the Western Ghats, from Karnataka to Maharashtra, aligns with pre-monsoon patterns that typically precede monsoon onset.
In Nala Sopara (Palghar district), heavy rains caused a roof collapse, though fortunately, two people were rescued unharmed. Similar downpours are being recorded across Delhi-NCR, East, West, and Northern India, ahead of the official monsoon season.
Rain and Storm Forecast Extended to May 26
Beyond May 25, rains are expected to continue in:
-
Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan:
Thunderstorms and winds between 30–50 km/h -
Uttarakhand and Eastern UP:
Possible hailstorms and lightning storms
The IMD has advised residents in all affected areas to stay updated on local forecasts, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rains, and ensure adequate precautions in storm-prone zones.
Outlook: A Powerful Start to the Monsoon Season
With widespread pre-monsoon rainfall, gusty winds, and thunderstorms hitting multiple regions, India’s monsoon season appears to be starting early and energetically. While this brings respite from extreme heat and boosts agricultural prospects, the accompanying disruptions highlight the need for vigilance.
