Encounter in Deoria: Thief Injured During Police Shootout

Deoria, May 19: A police encounter took place in Deoria district involving a thief who had been stealing from liquor stores. During the exchange of fire, the suspect was shot in the left leg and has been apprehended in a wounded state.

The Rudrapur police received a tip-off about a suspect traveling in a Bolero vehicle, targeting various liquor shops in the area. Acting on this information, the police team attempted to intercept the vehicle, but the suspect fled at high speed.

After a prolonged chase, the Bolero became stuck in a field near the Semrauna Bridge on the Nakail road. The suspect abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot. Despite warnings to surrender, he opened fire on the police team. In response, the police returned fire, injuring the suspect in the left leg.

The injured suspect has been identified as Pyarelal Prajapati, originally from Ghazipur district. During initial questioning, he admitted to committing thefts at several liquor stores in Deoria. According to police, he primarily targeted cash kept in the stores and would destroy DVR cameras to conceal his identity. The injured suspect has been admitted to the Rudrapur Community Health Center (PHC) for treatment, where his condition is reported to be stable.

Deoria’s Superintendent of Police, Abhijit R. Shankar, stated, “A checking operation was underway on Monday night. Acting on a tip-off, the Rudrapur police team took immediate action. Despite repeated instructions to stop, the suspect did not comply and attempted to flee. He fired at the police while trying to escape. In self-defense, the police returned fire, injuring him. He was promptly taken to the hospital. Further investigation into the matter is ongoing.”
