Ruturaj Gaikwad Proud of Team Despite Setback Against SRH

Chennai, May 19: In the 63rd match of IPL 2026, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faced a 5-wicket defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). This loss at MA Chidambaram Cricket Stadium has made CSK’s path to the playoffs extremely challenging. Despite the setback, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad praised his team’s performance.

After the match, Gaikwad stated, “It was a fantastic cricket match. We were in the game until the 19th over. The pitch was good for T20 cricket, and there were no changes during the match. We just missed a few opportunities. Still, given our limited squad, I am proud and believe we performed well. Honestly, there are many positives. Sanju is playing exceptionally well for us. Several key players have missed this season. Clearly, it depends on various factors. Everyone gave their all in this match, and I am proud of the players. Our crowd and fans support us through thick and thin. Compared to last year, we have improved significantly this season.”

This defeat marked CSK’s seventh loss in IPL 2026. With 12 points from 13 matches, the team’s chances for the playoffs are slim. CSK must win their final league match by a significant margin and rely on the outcomes of other matches. On Monday, after winning the toss against SRH, Gaikwad opted to bat first. CSK scored 180 runs, losing 7 wickets in 20 overs, thanks to Dewald Brevis’s quickfire 44 off 27 balls and Karthik Sharma’s 32 runs.

However, CSK’s bowlers failed to defend the target of 181 runs on a challenging pitch. For SRH, Ishan Kishan played a stellar innings, scoring 70 runs off 47 balls, while Heinrich Klaasen contributed 47 runs off 26 balls. Their crucial partnership of 75 runs for the third wicket proved to be the turning point of the match. With this victory, SRH secured their spot in the playoffs.
