Punjab CM Criticizes Central Government Over Rising Prices and Unannounced Lockdown

Patna, May 19: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann launched a sharp attack on the central government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday, addressing the rising inflation and restrictions imposed on citizens.

Mann asserted that the central government has effectively pushed the nation into an “unannounced lockdown,” while concealing the true state of the economy from the public.

He claimed that the government deliberately kept fuel prices low until the elections, only to burden citizens with increased costs once the elections were over. Mann demanded that the central government publicly disclose the actual status of India’s oil, gas, and gold reserves.

Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister emphasized that both the state government and the Aam Aadmi Party will ensure that no genuine voter names are removed and no fake voter names are added during the special intensive review process in Punjab.

While discussing the “Jagat Jyot Shri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026,” he noted that this law fulfills a long-standing demand of the global Sikh community by ensuring strict penalties for those who disrespect the Guru Granth Sahib.

Mann reiterated that the central government has indeed imposed an unannounced lockdown on the country. He stated, “The entire nation is suffering due to these restrictions, while the central government continues to hide the true condition of the economy.”

He urged the Prime Minister to provide public information regarding the country’s oil, gas, and gold reserves so that citizens can understand the nation’s real situation.

The Chief Minister asserted that the people of the country have the right to know the truth about the economic situation. Instead of concealing facts, the central government should present complete information related to oil, gas, and gold reserves to the public.

Mann pointed out that the central government intentionally did not raise fuel prices in several states before the assembly elections, but increased them by ₹3 per liter immediately after the elections, with further hikes likely in the coming days.

He remarked, “Under the pretext of ongoing wars in Gulf countries, the repeated hikes in fuel prices are crushing people under the burden of inflation.”
