New Delhi, May 19: Fuel prices have seen a significant increase, with petrol rising by 86 paise and diesel by 83 paise per liter. Following this adjustment, the price of petrol in the national capital has reached ₹98.64 per liter, while diesel is now priced at ₹91.58 per liter.
Notably, this increase follows a previous hike on May 15, when petrol and diesel prices were raised by ₹3 per liter, and CNG prices increased by ₹2. This led to sharp reactions from the opposition and sparked political debates.
In response to the rising oil and gas prices, leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defended the decision. They compared the price increases in India with those in other countries, asserting that India has imposed the least burden on its citizens among major economies.
Amit Malviya took to the social media platform ‘X’ to highlight that after the outbreak of war in West Asia, global petrol and diesel prices surged significantly. With the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and disrupted oil supplies, Brent crude prices remained above $100 per barrel for most of April and May. This has had a direct impact on petrol prices worldwide. However, India has emerged as a notable exception in this scenario.
Malviya pointed out that petrol prices in the United States have risen by 44.5%, while diesel prices have increased by 48.1%. In Pakistan, petrol prices have surged by 54.9%, and diesel prices by 44.9%. The UK has seen petrol prices rise by 19.2% and diesel prices by 34.2%.
In contrast, the BJP leader noted that in India, the increases have been relatively modest, with petrol prices up by only 3.2% and diesel prices by 3.4%.
Meanwhile, the Congress party has targeted the central government over these hikes. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh posted on ‘X’ that now, as international oil prices rise due to the war initiated by the Prime Minister’s close allies in the US and Israel, and with assembly elections concluded, the government has increased prices after raising commercial LPG rates. This is expected to further fuel inflation.
