West Bengal DGPs Term Extended by Six Months Ahead of Elections

Kolkata, April 27: Just 48 hours before the second and final phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections, the Ministry of Home Affairs has issued an order extending the term of the current Director General of Police (DGP) Siddh Nath Gupta by six months.

Gupta was set to retire on April 30. On Monday, Sanjeev Kumar, the Additional Secretary of the Home Ministry, informed West Bengal’s Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariyala through a letter that Gupta’s tenure would continue beyond April 30. The letter stated that this extension was granted in the public interest.

The Election Commission had previously announced the voting and counting dates for West Bengal, along with four other states and one Union Territory. Following this, Siddh Nath Gupta, a 1992 batch IPS officer, was appointed as the DGP, replacing Piyush Pandey.

At that time, the Commission also made changes to other key police officials in the state, including the Kolkata Police Commissioner, the Additional Director General (Law and Order), and the Additional Director (Reform Services).

On the same day, the Election Commission appointed Dushyant Nariyala as the new Chief Secretary, replacing Nandini Chakraborty, and Sangamitra Ghosh as the new Home Secretary, replacing Jagdish Prasad Meena.

Subsequently, there were several transfers, appointments, and deputations of IAS and IPS officers. The next phase will involve large-scale transfers of West Bengal Civil Service and West Bengal Police officers, including Block Development Officers and inspectors in the police force.

The ruling Trinamool Congress has consistently opposed these extensive transfers and even approached the Calcutta High Court regarding the matter, but the court declined to intervene.
