Oslo, May 19: Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized India’s significant global role during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders from other Nordic countries on Tuesday. She stated that collaboration with one of the world’s largest powers can bring stability, prosperity, and unity amid global uncertainties.
Frederiksen noted, “There is a growing belief that middle powers should work together. It is not accurate to label India as a middle power, as it is among the world’s leading nations. The Nordic countries may be small in size, but together they form an influential force.”
According to Frederiksen, partnering with a major power like India, based on shared values and common goals, can foster stability and prosperity in a rapidly changing world.
At the conclusion of the third India-Nordic Summit, Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stated that discussions focused on strengthening support for international law and advancing a rules-based order that requires reform and progress. He highlighted the importance of achieving a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and the need for diplomatic solutions to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
Støre mentioned that leaders reviewed cooperation in security and trade, discussing ways to deepen economic ties with India in the context of free trade agreements with both the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries and the European Union.
“We focused on supporting international law and the need for a rules-based order, emphasizing the necessity for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and finding diplomatic solutions to conflicts in the Middle East. We discussed how to deepen our economic relations following the free trade agreement between EFTA countries and India, as well as between the EU and India,” Støre added.
Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson thanked PM Modi for strong cooperation at both the bilateral and Nordic levels. He expressed confidence that the EU-India free trade agreement would bring new opportunities for both India and Europe. “There are significant possibilities for expanding partnerships in investment, innovation, diplomacy, and defense cooperation,” he stated.
Reflecting on his recent visit to India with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo noted that the Nordic countries share common priorities with India, including strengthening a rules-based international order and addressing climate change through consistent multilateral action.
Orpo remarked, “I had a productive bilateral discussion with Prime Minister Modi. Our relationship is progressing well. President Stubb and I had the opportunity to visit India earlier this year, where we established a strategic partnership in digitalization and sustainability. Finland is committed to turning this partnership into concrete actions.”
Iceland’s Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir highlighted the summit’s significance, emphasizing how Nordic countries, despite being geographically distant from India, can connect through shared interests and come together as partners.
“This summit is particularly timely for us. It demonstrates that even though we are miles away from India as a group, and countries like Iceland differ greatly in scale and size, there are many things that unite us. Prime Minister Modi mentioned our expertise in geothermal energy. Renewable energy is an area we are eager to share, and we know we receive valuable insights in return,” she stated.
