India and Nordic Countries Forge New Green Technology Partnership

Oslo, May 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Tuesday that India and the Nordic countries have decided to elevate their relationship to a strategic partnership focused on green technology and innovation. He stated that this partnership will integrate Sweden’s advanced manufacturing and defense, Finland’s telecom and digital technology, and Denmark’s cybersecurity and health tech with India’s talent to develop reliable solutions for the world.

During a joint press conference after the third India-Nordic Summit held in Oslo, PM Modi emphasized the significance of this partnership. He said, “Today, we have decided to shape India-Nordic relations into a green technology and innovation strategic partnership.”

Through this collaboration, expertise in geothermal energy and fisheries from Iceland, Norway’s blue economy, and the maritime and sustainable development capabilities of all Nordic countries will be combined with India’s talent to ensure a better future for the entire world.

PM Modi highlighted that research and innovation are crucial pillars of the India-Nordic partnership. Both sides will enhance cooperation between universities, laboratories, and startup ecosystems, while also strengthening collaboration in Arctic and polar research.

He noted that investment funds from Nordic countries are becoming vital partners in India’s rapid economic growth. The recently concluded India-European Free Trade Agreement (EFTA) marks the beginning of a golden era in their relations.

PM Modi remarked, “In the past ten years, our bilateral trade has nearly quadrupled. Nordic investments have significantly accelerated India’s development journey, benefiting both economies and creating thousands of jobs.”

He mentioned that India has recently implemented trade agreements with Norway, Iceland, and other EFTA countries, and the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement has also been finalized, which includes Denmark, Finland, and Sweden.

PM Modi stated, “From October 2025, we will implement trade and economic partnerships with Norway, Iceland, and other EFTA countries. Just a few months ago, we completed the India-EU FTA, which also includes Denmark, Finland, and Sweden. These trade agreements will herald a new golden era in India-Nordic relations. We have decided to shape India-Norway relations into a green technology and innovation strategic partnership.”

He concluded that this green technology partnership will combine Iceland’s zero thermal emissions, Norway’s blue economy, and the sustainability expertise of all Nordic countries with India’s scale to ensure a better future for the world.

This unique strategic partnership will develop reliable solutions for the world by integrating Sweden’s advanced manufacturing and defense, Finland’s telecom and digital technology, and Denmark’s cybersecurity and health tech with India’s talent.
