Thiruvananthapuram, May 19: Former Chief Minister and current Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan has publicly responded for the first time following the Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) significant defeat in the Kerala Assembly elections. His statement comes at a time when discontent and dissent within the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPM, are increasingly vocal.
Speaking at a party event in his home district of Kannur on Tuesday, Vijayan highlighted the various welfare and developmental initiatives the Left government implemented over the past decade to advance Kerala. He noted significant achievements in sectors such as health, education, waste management, and the safety of women and children.
Vijayan stated, “We fully accept the people’s decision. We do not claim that only we can do this work. If the new government works for public welfare, we will support it; however, we will oppose it if the path is wrong. No one should interpret this as the end of the LDF or CPM. We will make a strong comeback.”
This is considered his first direct public response since the election results were announced on May 4. The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a commanding majority by winning 102 seats. In contrast, the LDF, which aimed to return to power for a historic third consecutive term, managed to secure only 35 seats. The BJP also marked its presence in the Assembly by winning three seats.
Since the election results, Vijayan had been largely absent from the public eye. A few days after the defeat, he made only a brief post on social media. His prolonged silence sparked discussions in political circles and increased criticism within the party.
Vijayan’s statement is deemed significant as reports indicate unprecedented discontent against him during the CPM’s district committee review meetings across Kerala. Sources suggest that several leaders have accused Vijayan of being arrogant and disconnected from grassroots workers. Some have pointed to excessive centralization of power and a disconnect from the public and party workers as major reasons for the electoral loss.
It has been reported that demands to remove Vijayan from the Leader of Opposition position were raised in some meetings, along with calls for state secretary M.V. Govindan to resign, taking responsibility for the defeat.
In this context, Vijayan’s assertion of a “strong comeback” is seen not only as an attempt to boost the morale of his supporters but also as a signal to maintain his grip and leadership within the party.
