Bhubaneswar, May 19: The Crime Branch of Odisha Police has arrested two additional suspects involved in the brutal mob lynching of Government Railway Police constable Soumya Ranjan Swain. This incident occurred on May 7 in the Balayanta area of Bhubaneswar.
On May 19, the Crime Branch announced in a press release that the main accused, Panchanan Barjena, also known as Kalia, and Ranjit Rana were apprehended in the Ranpur forest of Nayagarh district. Solid evidence collected during the investigation linked the suspects to the attack on the victim.
To date, a total of 15 individuals have been arrested in connection with this case, including 11 suspects who were previously detained by Balayanta police.
The Crime Branch has taken over the investigation of two cases registered at Balayanta police station. One case pertains to the mob lynching of Soumya Ranjan Swain, while the other is based on a complaint from a girl who alleged that the deceased attempted to sexually assault her.
On May 7, constable Soumya Ranjan Swain was beaten to death by a mob in the outskirts of Bhubaneswar after being accused of attempting to sexually assault a girl.
Soumya was riding his motorcycle with his friend, Om Prakash, when their bike collided with a scooter carrying two girls in the Binghapur-Kaja area. This collision led to a dispute between both parties.
One girl accused Soumya of attempting sexual assault, prompting local villagers to rush to the scene and attack both individuals. The police later intervened and rushed them to the hospital, where doctors declared Soumya dead.
Following this incident, four police officers were suspended, and the then-in-charge of Balayanta police station was transferred for failing to act during the mob attack.
