Guwahati, May 19: Police in Assam’s Cachar district have arrested three Bangladeshi nationals, including a woman, for allegedly entering India illegally. Authorities reported that the arrests occurred during a routine inspection by officers from the Gumra police outpost under the Katigorah police station.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Mohammad Awal, Reena Akhtar, and Mohammad Haroon. They are suspected of crossing the Indian border from neighboring Bangladesh without valid travel documents.
A police official stated that the operation was conducted based on specific information regarding the movement of suspected illegal immigrants in the Katigorah area of southern Assam. The trio was stopped during the investigation, which revealed that they could not present any valid Indian identification or legal documents permitting them to stay in the country.
Authorities suspect that the three entered Assam through an insecure or open area along the India-Bangladesh border before heading towards Cachar district. Interrogations are ongoing to determine the route of entry, potential local connections, and whether their movement involved any organized network.
Legal action has been initiated against the accused under relevant sections of the Foreigners Act and the Passport Act.
In recent months, security agencies in Assam, particularly in districts bordering Bangladesh and transit routes, have intensified monitoring and inspection efforts to prevent illegal immigration and cross-border movement.
