Chennai, May 8: Thirumavalavan, the president of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), announced on Friday that the party will officially declare its stance on the rapidly changing political situation in Tamil Nadu after extensive discussions with senior leaders and officials.
Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Thirumavalavan stated that a high-level committee of VCK will convene via video conference at 5 PM to discuss the uncertainty surrounding government formation following the recent assembly elections, which resulted in a hung assembly.
He mentioned that the decisions made during the meeting will be formally communicated to the media. “After the high-level committee meeting, we will address the press on Saturday morning and clarify the party’s position,” he said.
Responding to criticism regarding the delay in the party’s response, Thirumavalavan emphasized that the election results were announced on May 4, and any democratic party requires time for internal discussions before making significant political decisions. “We are not delaying. It is a standard procedure in a democratic system to reach a final decision after collective discussions,” he added.
As the party leader, Thirumavalavan acknowledged his authority to make independent decisions. However, he stressed the importance of understanding the opinions and sentiments of party leaders and workers before announcing an official stance.
Due to the online nature of the meeting, he noted that senior leaders are located in various districts of Tamil Nadu, making it impractical for them to gather in Chennai immediately.
When asked about the speculations regarding potential agreements between DMK and AIADMK for government formation, Thirumavalavan declined to comment, stating it would be inappropriate to express personal opinions before internal discussions within the party.
Regarding whether Chief Minister Stalin had reached out to him amid the political developments, Thirumavalavan confirmed that a meeting of the leaders of the Secular Progressive Alliance had already taken place after the election results, where the situation was discussed.
According to Thirumavalavan, Stalin conveyed that the alliance respects the public mandate and will not obstruct the government formation led by the victorious TVK.
However, when asked if VCK would support the TVK government if it sought assistance, Thirumavalavan refrained from giving a direct answer, stating that the matter would first be discussed within the party before any official decision is announced.
