Kolkata, May 15: BJP legislator Rathindra Bose has been elected as the new Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari escorted him to his seat in the house and congratulated all newly elected legislators.
During the assembly session held in Kolkata, Chief Minister Adhikari expressed that this assembly will mark a significant chapter in the state’s democratic history. He emphasized the need for both the government and the opposition to work together for the public’s benefit while maintaining the dignity of the assembly.
BJP legislator Tarun Jyoti Tiwari responded sharply to comments regarding Abhishek Banerjee’s new government. He stated that the public has democratically elected the government, and the BJP is committed to serving the people of the state.
On the issue of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s appearance in the Calcutta High Court, BJP legislator Maumita Biswas Mishra raised questions. She insisted that it should be clarified whether her license and related certificates are valid. The BJP has deemed this matter serious and is calling for transparency.
A major controversy in state politics arose when the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas. BJP leaders reacted strongly to this action. Legislator Debashish Dhar remarked that this action should have occurred earlier, citing long-standing corruption and mafia operations in the state.
BJP legislator Bankim Chandra Ghosh also stated that strict action should be taken against those abusing administrative positions. He asserted that those who have committed wrongdoings must face legal consequences.
In the same context, BJP legislator Indranil Khan alleged that corruption has persisted in the state for years, particularly in ration and recruitment scams. He highlighted the violation of the rights of the poor and youth, insisting that the guilty should be punished through judicial processes.
However, Trinamool Congress legislator Kunal Ghosh criticized the central government, stating that the continuous rise in petrol and diesel prices is a heavy burden on the common people. He acknowledged global circumstances but insisted that the government should have a solid plan to address these issues.
