West Bengal Governments Triangular Strategy for Land Transfer to BSF at International Border

Kolkata, May 15: Upon taking office, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari of West Bengal has implemented a triangular strategy for transferring land to the Border Security Force (BSF) for flood prevention along the international border with Bangladesh.

Sources familiar with the land transfer strategy at the state secretariat revealed that the first part of the plan involves immediately providing government land near the unfenced international border to the BSF. This will allow the initial phase of barbed wire fencing to commence without delay.

The second part of the strategy focuses on acquiring privately owned land near the border by offering compensation above the current market value. This land will then be transferred to the BSF to initiate the second phase of the fencing project.

The third component involves reclaiming encroached land near unfenced borders and subsequently transferring it to the BSF, completing the process.

Sources indicated that the process for the first phase of the land transfer strategy has already begun. A specific timeline has been established for each phase, and the entire process is expected to be completed within 45 days from the date of the cabinet decision regarding this matter.

Nandini Chakraborty, the former Chief Secretary of West Bengal, has been appointed as the chief coordinator for overseeing the entire process and ensuring a smooth transfer of land to the BSF.

One of the key promises in the BJP’s manifesto prior to the recent West Bengal Assembly elections was to allocate land to the BSF for barbed fencing along unfenced borders. This issue had been pending for a long time due to the reluctance of the previous Trinamool Congress-led government.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also pledged during pre-election rallies in the state that the decision to transfer land to the BSF would be the first action taken by a BJP-led government in West Bengal.
