Thiruvananthapuram, May 15: In Kerala’s political landscape, the stronghold of VD Satheesan is transforming the celebratory atmosphere within the Congress camp into a complex and politically explosive cabinet formation process.
The selection of the Chief Minister required ten days of intense discussions and careful balancing. The ongoing battle for ministerial positions is expected to be an even greater test for both Satheesan and the Congress high command.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) achieved a remarkable victory, securing 102 out of 140 seats in the assembly. However, the mathematics of power-sharing is already casting a shadow over the celebrations. Among these 102 seats, Congress boasts an impressive 63 legislators.
Despite this significant number, the party struggles to accommodate some of its ambitious faces. The constitutional limit for the Kerala cabinet, including the Chief Minister, is capped at 21 members. After allocating seats to coalition partners and reserving a position for the Speaker, Congress is likely to secure only about a dozen positions.
In Kerala’s coalition politics, cabinet formation is not solely based on seniority or performance. Decisions are influenced by complex factors such as regional representation, caste equations, religious balance, community influence, and factional pressures. This time, the queue of candidates for ministerial positions is exceptionally long.
Prominent senior leaders include Ramesh Chennithala, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, Sany Joseph, K. Muraleedharan, A.P. Anil Kumar, and N. Sakthan. These seasoned leaders possess administrative experience and robust factional support.
Following them is a group of ambitious young and mid-generation leaders, including I.C. Balakrishnan, M. Vincent, Rosie M. John, P.C. Vishnunath, T.G. Vinod, Mathew Kuzhalnadan, V.T. Balram, Chandy Omman, and M. Liju.
