New York, March 21: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed concern over the escalating tensions between Iran and the United States-Israel. He defended the role of the UN as a multilateral organization capable of providing assistance during crises.
Guterres dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump’s initiative, the ‘Board of Peace’ for the Hormuz Strait, as ineffective. He acknowledged his active participation in Trump’s Board of Peace in Gaza.
Recently, a meeting of the European Council took place in Brussels, focusing on the ongoing attacks between Israel and Iran, as well as the situation in the Hormuz Strait. Guterres attended this meeting, emphasizing the UN’s role in the current circumstances.
When asked if he had spoken with Trump since the outbreak of hostilities between Iran and the U.S.-Israel, Guterres replied, “No.” However, he noted that he had communicated with other officials in the U.S. government.
Regarding the crisis in the Hormuz Strait, Guterres stated that the UN is prepared to assist in reopening the strait. In 2022, the UN facilitated a similar deal between Russia and Ukraine for the transport of grain and fertilizers through the Black Sea.
He said, “My main goal is to see if it is possible to restore conditions in the Hormuz Strait to what they were before. The UN is currently in discussions with Gulf countries and the European Council about the situation.”
The Black Sea Grain Initiative is a deal brokered by the UN and Turkey, allowing Ukraine, which is struggling due to war, to export millions of metric tons of food. However, Russia later withdrew its support for this agreement.
To establish peace globally, President Trump initiated the Board of Peace, starting with Gaza. The UN Secretary-General remarked that while the UN is actively collaborating with Trump’s Board of Peace, the president’s approach alone is not an effective solution to the pressing issues we face.
He further stated, “Everything is now a personal project of President Trump, with him having complete control over it. We need to be clear about international law and the values of the UN Charter. This is essential for any peace initiative.”
